Engineering Adaptive Trivia: How We Built Question Pipelines for QuizzyBits
Maintaining a consistently fresh trivia catalog requires robust architectural boundaries. In QuizzyBits, our goal was to support diverse knowledge categories while preventing repetitive questions and keeping mobile gameplay responsive.

The Challenge of Real-Time Generation
Direct LLM prompting in the middle of a live user session introduces two major failure points: variable round-trip network latency and the risk of hallucinated facts. To solve this, we decoupled inference from consumption by introducing an asynchronous pipeline: background generation pools, strict deterministic JSON schema validation, and semantic deduplication.
Strict Schema Constraints & Distractor Verification
Every question payload returned by our pipeline conforms to a rigid schema. Beyond syntactic correctness, an evaluation pass confirms that each distractor is plausible within the category yet unambiguous. If an inference payload fails validation, it is discarded before touching the edge cache.
struct QuizQuestionPayload: Codable, Sendable {
let id: UUID
let category: String
let difficulty: QuestionDifficulty
let prompt: String
let options: [String] // Exactly 4 verified options
let correctIndex: Int
let explanation: String
let verificationSource: String
}Pre-Validation and Client-Side Caching
To prevent network round trips from interrupting user gameplay, question sets are compiled and validated asynchronously before sessions begin. The client caches verified sets locally, synchronizing fresh categories in background tasks. This architecture ensures instantaneous screen transitions and guarantees that users never encounter an empty trivia state during intermittent mobile connectivity.
